Placement Testing


Due to the COVID-19, all face-to-face testing is canceled until further notice. All placement testing will be completed remotely until further notice. If you are required to take placement tests, you will receive an email with instructions for completing each test.

What is Placement Testing?

Shipensburg University's General Education program requires students to take various courses to develop certain skills and competencies. The mission of Placement Testing is to determine whether or not students are adequately prepared to succeed in these courses. We determine level of proficiency by testing Math and Writing (English).

The Shippensburg University Testing Center also provides an optional Reading test for students who are required to take Developmental Reading & Study Skills (RDG 050) and wish to challenge their placement in that course.

Registering for Placement Testing

If you are required to take a placement test, you will have a checklist item in your . At this time, we are not offering face-to-face placement testing appointments. All placement testing will be completed remotely. If you have to test, you will receive an email with instructions for completing the required tests to your SU Email account. 

On the Day of Placement Testing

  • Arrival: Plan to arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to your testing time to sign in, obtain a parking pass, and receive testing instructions; testing starts promptly at the stated time.
  • What to Bring: You must bring a photo ID, Initial Placement Testing Notification Email with your SAT/ACT scores (indicating what placement tests you need), and know your Shippensburg University ID number and Ship email address and password.
    • Student IDs must include: Student name, recognizable photograph, and signature (if applicable). Acceptable forms of ID include:
      • Driver's license
      • High School (must be recent) or College ID
      • State or federal ID card
      • Military ID Card
      • Passport
      • Tribal ID card
      • Naturalization card or certificate of citizenship
  • Timing: Math and English (Writing) placement tests are untimed. The Townsend Press Reading Challenge test has a maximum time limit of 50 minutes (extended time must be preapproved - please contact before the date of your test if you need extended time).
  • Test Materials: We will provide all necessary test materials. Calculators are not permitted.
  • Test Results: You will receive your Math (and Reading) results immediately after testing. Results will then be explained by the Testing Center staff. If further clarification is necessary, contact for a more thorough explanation. For students taking the English (Writing) placement test, the student’s placement will be displayed on their under "My Test Scores" once the English department determines an appropriate placement.
